Is it ready? Is it blocked? Is it waiting on someone? Did it ship?

Most status churn comes from the system failing to make that obvious. So people start checking manually. Then the check-ins become part of the process. Then everyone is busy, but the work is still harder to see than it should be.

A clean workflow does not need constant interpretation. It should tell the truth about the state of the work fast enough that nobody has to go hunting for it.
