
Blocked work should say what it needs
A blocked status sounds clear until you look closely at what the team can actually do with it. A task gets marked blocked, everyone sees the label, and the work still goes nowhere because the real problem was never spelled out.
Blocked by what? A specific approval? A customer reply? A file that has not been uploaded yet? A decision nobody has made? Those details matter because they tell the next person how to help. Without them, the label only tells the team that motion stopped. It does not tell anyone how to restart it.
This is where a lot of extra delay gets created. People assume somebody else already understands the situation. The task stays parked. Later, someone comes back, asks what the block actually is, and the team loses another cycle just getting back to the same place.
Good operations make the missing piece visible. If the work needs legal review, say that. If it needs a final number from finance, say that. If it is waiting on a customer document, say that too. A useful blocked status points at the exact thing that has to happen next.
"Blocked" is a state. It is not the explanation. If work cannot move, the system should say what it needs.
