
The system should show why it stopped
A workflow does not become trustworthy just because it knows when to stop.
That is a good start, but it is only half the job. A lot of systems hit the judgment edge, pause correctly, and then hand a person almost nothing useful. The work is stuck. The status changed. Maybe there is a warning. But the person stepping in still has to piece together what triggered the pause, what information was missing, and what decision is actually being asked of them.
That creates a different version of the same drag teams were trying to remove in the first place. Instead of a bad automatic decision, they get a vague interruption. Someone has to reopen the task, check the record, search the thread, and reconstruct the context before they can even make the call. The system avoided one mistake, but it did not create a clean handoff.
Useful autonomy needs more than a stop sign. It needs explanation at the point of pause. What did the system see? Which rule or condition caused it to stop? What is still unclear? What are the options? What exactly needs human judgment now?
When that is visible, the person stepping in can move fast without starting from scratch. The pause becomes part of a well-designed workflow instead of another mystery the team has to unravel.
Good systems should know when the answer needs a person. They should also make that moment legible.
